The aim of the Brill Research Perspectives in Philosophy of Education (RPPES) series is to provide short monographs on central aspects of the field of philosophy of education, such as central thinkers (classical and recent), seminal works, movements and schools of thought, important ideas and concepts. The long-term aim is to establish an encyclopedic series of philosophy of education monographs, where each volume can be updated when needed, and main subjects can be expanded and specified to have more than one volume.

RPPES will offer a comprehensive reference resource for scholars and students working in the areas of, especially, philosophy of education, pedagogy – i.e. Pädagogik, pédagogique, pedagogía – and educational studies in general. Moreover, through its philosophical emphasis and depth, the series will be of interest to general philosophy, i.e. logics, theory of knowledge, metaphysics, ethics, political and social philosophy as well as poetics and aesthetics and the history of philosophy.

The series provides in-depth scholarly work on the main issues and figures in philosophy of education. This includes scholarly studies of classics such as Plato, Rousseau, Dewey et al., systematic analysis of concepts such as learning, childhood, virtue, citizenship education and imagination, as well as the major traditions and schools within philosophy of education.

The series makes it a priority to include not just established views and figures, but also up-and-coming scholars and marginal perspectives, thus bridging gaps between philosophy of education, philosophy and education, as well as Anglophone and non-Anglophone research communities. Each monograph is fully peer-reviewed and referenced and provides an overview of the most up-to-date research in the area dealt with. RPPES will be an invaluable resource for scholars wishing to draw on the latest research, as well as a dynamic resource for teaching and for students working in philosophy, education and related fields.

Experiences and Approaches from a Pan-European Perspective
Placemaking has become a key concept in many disciplines. Due to an increase in digitization, mobilities, migration and rapid changes to the urban environments, it is important to learn how planning and social experts practice it in different contexts. Placemaking in Practice provides an inventory of practices, reflecting on different issues related to placemaking from a pan European perspective. It brings different cases, perspectives, and results analysed under the same purpose, to advance knowledge on placemaking, the actors engaged and results for people. It is backed by an intensive review of recent literature on placemaking, engagement, methods and activism results - towards developing a new placemaking agenda. Placemaking in Practice combines theory, methodology, methods (including digital ones) and their application in a pan-European context and imbedded into a relevant historical context.

The early Frankfurt School and feminism can and should inform each other. This volume presents an original collection of scholarship bringing together scholars of the Frankfurt School and feminist scholars. Essays included in the volume explore ideas from the early Frankfurt School that were explicitly focused on sex, gender, and sexuality, and bring ideas from the early Frankfurt School into productive dialogue with historical and contemporary feminist theory. Ranging across philosophy, sociology, gender and sexuality studies, science studies, and cultural studies, the essays investigate heteropatriarchy, essentialism, identity, intersectional feminism, and liberation. Set against an alarming context of growing gender and related forms of authoritarianism, this timely volume demonstrates the necessity of thinking these powerhouse approaches together in a united front.

This volume offers a critical re-assessment of the thought of Ernst Bloch, best-known for his groundbreaking study The Principle of Hope and one of the most significant European thinkers and public intellectuals of the twentieth century. It explores Bloch’s life, work and reception; his debt to Marx and Hegel; his central concepts of hope and utopia; his affinities with philosophers such as Gramsci and Žižek; and his radical reframing of our understanding of history, society and culture. Above all, this volume examines the relevance of Bloch’s ideas today, in a world still shot through with economic inequality and social injustice.

Critical posthumanism can be understood as the discourse that deconstructively inhabits humanism and critiques its anthropocentrism. It works both genealogically – in historicising the contemporary figure of the posthuman – and speculatively – in imagining, analysing and evaluating scenarios of humanity’s perceived exceptionalism, challenges, or ends. It thus critically engages with unsettling anticipations of the future, provides timely critiques of the present and produces rewritings and alternative narratives with a postanthropocentric or nonhuman dimension. Critical posthumanism’s concerns typically embrace the impacts of bio- and digital technology; ecological crises; the development of artificial intelligence; more-than-human ethics; politics and justice and their interdisciplinary debate within the new or posthumanities.

Critical Posthumanisms is a series addressing all the above. It publishes cutting-edge monographs and edited collections focusing on the rise of posthumanism and its forms, perspectives and directions. It makes available studies by scholars whose perspectives on the posthuman, nonhuman or more-than-human vary in important and interesting ways, and should serve as a crucial point of reference for anybody working within the field.

Books within the series provide:
- inter- or multidisciplinary takes on posthumanism, the posthuman, nonhuman or more-than-human, particularly those allowing the new humanities or posthumanities to critically engage with areas like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, virtual reality, climate change, geo-engineering, etc.;
- analyses of the histories, genealogies, idioms, and canons of different posthumanisms and discussions of the main sources, thinkers and trends of posthumanism;
- alternative formulations of posthumanism, which problematise the centrality of technology;
- philosophical and political critiques of the prosthesisation, enhancement, transformation or transcendence of the human or nonhuman;
- investigations into the role and future of fictional and speculative discourses in literature, film, art, performance, media and science involving scenarios of posthumanisation (or becoming-other-than-human).

In The Struggle for Development and Democracy Alessandro Olsaretti argues that we need significantly new theories of development and democracy to answer the problem posed by neoliberalism and the populist backlash, namely, uneven development and divisive politics heightened by the 9/11 attacks. This volume proposes a general theory of development and democracy, as part of a unified theory of power, emphasizing that development needs markets, civil society, and the state, and also the proper networks and interactions amongst markets, civil society, and the state. Imperialism undermines these interactions, and turns countries into providers of cheap land or labour. This book begins to sketch the mechanisms at work, and to answer one question: how did imperialist elites build their power?
