From tenth-century South India to twenty-first-century cultural events, from the court assemblies to the public space: Attentive Minds takes you on a journey through the fascinating world of avadhāna, a complex and long-living performative art of India whose practitioners showcase highly developed cognitive skills (like attention, ability to multitask, memory) and specialized knowledge.
With the help of epigraphic and literary sources and field research, Hermina Cielas reconstructs avadhāna’s history in its socio-cultural context and provides a detailed systematization of the art. Her multifaceted study investigates the cultural phenomenon scarcely known outside of India. It explores avadhāna’s multiple forms, from games and puzzles, through a display of mnemonic or motor skills, to multilingual literary feasts.

Across a powerfully wide-ranging set of themes, theoretical registers and historical examples, John Roberts analyses the key problems that continue to confront art after conceptual art, in the light of art’s longstanding relationship to market and institution the commodity and mass culture: namely, artistic labour and technology, modernity and the ‘new’, art and negation, identity and subjectivity, agency and audience, form and value. In these terms, the book provides a rigorous and ambitious, examination of the limits and possibilities of art’s contribution to emancipatory discourse and practice.

The aims of Australian Playwrights are:

• To contribute to the interpretation, critical analysis, recognition, promotion, and wider understanding of Australian drama, theatre and performance.
• To publish scholarship on Australian drama, theatre and performance, including: critical studies of a particular playwright, director or company and their plays, productions and/or performances; thematic studies exploring the work of a group of Australian playwrights, theatre companies and/or performance makers; and scholarly books investigating a period, topic or approach in Australian drama, theatre or performance.
• To enliven, enrich, inform and illustrate the study of drama, theatre and performance, both within Australia and internationally, especially for scholars, artists and students.

Each book in the series offers an in-depth study aimed at furthering knowledge of Australian drama, theatre and performance within the broader formation of Australian culture by drawing on a range of primary and secondary sources concerned with playwriting, performance-making, theatre production and/or critical reception.

New Directions in International Theatre and Performance

Published in association with the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR), this series is a platform for innovative scholarly work that takes seriously the pledge of the international. We ask: what promise does this term hold for Theatre and Performance Studies today? First coined in the late eighteenth century to define a space for inter-state relations, the term has since migrated from law to political and cultural practice, retaining connotations of an ever-expanding, progressive vision of global cooperation. Theatre and Performance Studies have long pursued the promise of the international, from re-thinking “national” canons to developing novel theoretical and methodological foundations for the study of theatre and performance. The series publishes both monographs and edited volumes that represent and at the same time critically interrogate these very processes. We thus invite submissions that examine the evolving diversity of performances from Eurasia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. We seek to become an intellectual home to manuscripts that contain an overtly international or transnational dimension, explore new historical, methodological and geographical frontiers, and address pressing contemporary concerns.

The Performance of Forgery in Late Medieval and Early Modern Culture
Faking It! collects eleven chapters which explore the question of forgery from different disciplinary angles: literary historical and art historical contributions share space with discussions of jewels, architecture and coinage. The various case studies take as their focus developments in Renaissance Italy and early modern England as well as in France, Germany, Malta, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Russia and Australia. While each chapter contributes to a better understanding of the local context of cultural production, together they suggest new answers to how we can understand forgery. The concept of performance allows us to see beyond normative approaches and gain insight into some of the ambiguities concerning the nature of forgery.

Written by the poet-painter Karel van Mander, who finished it in June 1603, the Grondt der edel, vry schilderconst (Foundation of the Noble, Free Art of Painting) was the first systematic treatise on schilderconst (the art of painting / picturing) to be published in Dutch (Haarlem: Paschier van Wes[t]busch, 1604). This English-language edition of the Grondt, accompanied by an introductory monograph and a full critical apparatus, provides unprecedented access to Van Mander’s crucially important art treatise. The book sheds light on key terms and critical categories such as schilder, manier, uyt zijn selven doen, welstandt, leven and gheest, and wel schilderen, and both exemplifies and explicates the author’s distinctive views on the complementary forms and functions of history and landscape.
Sources, Iconography and Science
Leonardo’s Fables explores the compositional methods and sources of Leonardo’s fables and their relationship to illustrations and scientific studies. By concentrating on the chaotic character of Leonardo’s textual and visual annotations, the author gradually discloses the artist’s creative thinking that uses the page as a space for experimentation.

Fables allow Leonardo to tie together his technical and artistic skills, empirical observation, and experience to reveal the interactive forces at the basis of physical phenomena and the tensions between painting and humanistic culture. This study reevaluates Leonardo’s fables as part of a literary, aesthetic, and scientific project aimed at the investigation of Nature.
Kalīla wa-Dimna is one of the best-known texts of medieval Arabic literature and counts among the most illustrated works in the Islamic world. The extent of the corpus and its journey through the ages make it the ideal material for a reflection on the evolution of iconography in Islamic art. The studies gathered in this volume edited by Eloïse Brac de la Perrière, Aïda El Khiari and Annie Vernay-Nouri, showcase a wide diversity of approaches that convincingly crosses textual investigation, codicology, iconographical study, and physico-chemical analyses. They explore new tracks, either by devoting themselves to the examination of unknown or rarely studied manuscripts, or by proposing innovative readings of this extremely rich work that is Kalīla wa-Dimna.

L'étendue du corpus et son parcours à travers les âges en font un extraordinaire matériau pour mener une réflexion sur l’image dans l’histoire des arts islamiques. Les études rassemblées dans ce volume dirigé par Eloïse Brac de la Perrière, Aïda El Khiari et Annie Vernay-Nouri, mettent en œuvre une grande diversité d'approches croisant investigation textuelle, codicologique, iconographique et analyses physico-chimiques.
