The queenship of the first European Renaissance queen regnant never ceases to fascinate. Was she a saint or a bigoted zealot? A pious wife or the one wearing the pants? Was she ultimately responsible for genocide? A case has been made to canonize her. Does she deserve to be called Saint Isabel? As different groups from fascists to feminists continue to fight over Isabel as cultural capital, we ask which (if any) of these recyclings are legitimate or appropriate. Or has this figure taken on a life of her own?

Este libro busca contribuir al impulso del estudio del actual cine poético hispanoamericano e íbero-peninsular, analizando aquellos modos contra-narrativos que enfatizan las particularidades formales del medio audiovisual, a la vez que rebajan el desarrollo del contenido --desplazando la acción fuera de plano. El presente libro parte asimismo de la premisa que la modernidad cinematográfica constituye el marco de referencia teórico-artístico al que muchos directores de cine poético recurren para elaborar sus propuestas fílmicas. Por ello, se propone también analizar las estrategias de composición vinculadas a la tradición cinematográfica de la modernidad que han sido críticamente reexaminadas en las películas producidas en el ámbito hispanoamericano e íbero-peninsular durante las primeras dos décadas del siglo XXI.

This book explores the shared approach to Spanish and Latin American filmmakers with experimental film practices and strategies of composition and links these to a tradition of cinematic modernity that is being critically re-assessed by these filmmakers. By adopting a decidedly transnational perspective, the author investigates the distinctive elements of contemporary poetic cinematographic productions that shape present-day Hispanic art house cinematic productions. Thus, the book reassesses the notion of poetic cinema as an interstitial film practice. The author first examines the multiple meanings that the notion of poetry in cinema has historically had. Second, she explores how Hispanic cinema inherited the artistic principles of European cinematic modernity, blending them with the Latin American cinematographic tradition of neorealist influence.
La via del conocimiento de la filosofía natural contrarreformista estuvo condicionada por la necesidad de conciliar el método escolástico con el experimental, a la luz de la evidencia de los nuevos descubrimientos científicos y geográficos. La cosmovisión oficial hizo uso de metodologías del saber, basadas en discursos como el antisupersticioso, en el que se apuntaba a la confluencia de métodos experimentales, religiosos y jurídicos, orientados hacia una interpretación más precisa de la realidad. En La ciencia de Cervantes. se confirma cómo en pasajes que describen exorcismos, interacciones entre animales y seres humanos y exploraciones geográficas de obras cervantinas, como Don Quijote., Persiles y Sigismunda. y las Novelas ejemplares., la confluencia de visiones artísticas y científicas de la época se pone de manifiesto. Llama la atención, especialmente, el caso del Coloquio de los perros., en donde se evidencia un intento de conciliar el conocimiento humanista, escolástico, antisupersticioso y barroco, en línea con otras excepcionales obras neoplatónicas similares, como son tanto el Somnium. de Maldonado como el de Kepler.

The Counter-reformation path to natural philosophy was increasingly conditioned by its need to reconciliate the scholastic method with the experimental one, at the light of the evidence of new scientific and geographic discoveries. Official world-view was supported by approaches to knowledge such as the anti-superstitious discourse, which were sustained by the confluence of experimental, religious and legal methodologies, in support of a more accurate interpretation of reality. La ciencia de Cervantes. shows how selected cervantine texts, including the Quixote., Persiles and Sigismunda., and the Exemplary Novels., reflect how the confluence of artistic and scientific views of the period was evidenced in the depiction, among others, of exorcisms, animal-human interactions and geographical explorations. Particularly relevant is the case of the Colloquy of the Dogs., showing an attempt to reconciliate the conflictive confluence of Humanistic, Scholastic, anti-superstitious and baroque knowledge, in line with other unique Neoplatonist works, such as Maldonado’s and Kepler’s Somnium.

Market relations are changing not only the distribution and promotion of literary works but also their content, their language, and their social and political function. This book penetrates the intricacies of literary production, circulation and reception, focusing on some of the most original and representative authors of today such as Roberto Bolaño, Gabriela Cabezón Camara, Yuri Herrera, and Irmgard Emmelhainz, among others. The book also illuminates on the “materialitity” of literature and the strategies of literary marketing: festivals, book fairs, digitalization, and translation. Globalization and regional particularisms meet, then, in the symbolic territories of the literary world, and expose their dynamics and intrinsic negotiations.
Which were the mechanisms by which certain groups were positioned at the margins of national narratives during the nineteenth century, either via their exclusion from these narratives of through their incorporation into them as ‘others’? By engaging with shifting ideas of exclusion and difference, the authors in this book reflect upon the paradoxical centrality of the subaltern at a time when literature was deployed as a tool for nation building. The lasting presence of the Jewish and Moorish legacy, the portrayal of gypsy characters, or the changing notions of femininity in public discourse exemplify the ways in which images of marginal ‘types’ played a central role in the configuration of the very idea of Spanishness.

During the 13th and 14th centuries, medieval Castile produced some of the liveliest, most sophisticated vernacular reworkings of narratives inherited from classical and late antiquity, including those about Alexander the Great, the Trojan War, or Apollonius of Tyre. This study recovers the overlooked tradition of the Castilian romances of antiquity, showing how these works offered a nuanced reflection of the relationship between cultural memory, the media through which memory is shaped and transmitted, and Castile’s imperial ambitions. Clara Pascual-Argente restores a genre of great cultural and political importance to its rightful place in Castilian and European literary history.

What happened to the Philippines after 1898? Does its emancipation process have anything to do with that of the Latin American countries? Is Philippine modernity an exclusive product of the US invasion? This edited volume overcomes nostalgic and neo-colonial agendas and forwards multiple-perspectives that critically examine the key decades during which Spanish-speaking intellectuals came to imagine themselves as a nation, as reflected in women’s magazines, travel books or costumbrista fiction. The studies will allow points of comparison with other literatures in Spanish as well as interrogating the complexities in turn-of-the century Philippine society, with its jazz halls, its suffragism and its independence movement, but at the same time its defence of Spanish language and Catholicism.
In Alfonso de Cartagena’s 'Memoriale virtutum' (1422), María Morrás and Jeremy Lawrance offer a critical edition of an anthology of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, compiled and significantly altered by the major Castilian intellectual of the day, Bishop Alfonso de Cartagena, and addressed to the heir to the throne of Portugal, Crown Prince Duarte.
The work is a speculum principis, an education of a future king in the virtues suitable to a statesman. Cartagena’s choice of Aristotle was a harbinger of Renaissance ideas. The “memorial” sheds light on a society in transition, setting new ethical guidelines for the ruling class at the crossroads between medieval feudalism and Renaissance absolutism.
