The Eight Books: A Complete English Translation is the first complete translation of the collected poems of Sohrab Sepehri (1928-1980), a major Iranian modernist poet and painter and yet under-translated into English. The introduction takes up Sepehri's famously difficult if languidly beautiful style to explain it as a series of appropriations of global modernisms in poetry and painting. It offers close readings of how Sepehri's modernism follows and breaks with the jagged rhythms of Nima Yushij (d.1960), Iran's inaugural modernist poet. In keeping with this modernist framing, the translations replicate Sepehri's rhymes where possible, his fluctuations between formal and colloquial registers, his syntactic distortions, and his embeddings of governmental and other jargons. It also includes Sepehri's autobiography.

Le statut polygraphique et la structure hétérogène de l’ Histoire des deux Indes invitent à réexaminer les méthodes et les stratégies employées par les rédacteurs, et amènent à lire le texte dans une double perspective : celle dictée par la tradition historiographique et celle suggérée, en parallèle, par les intrusions du discours philosophique. C’est ce dernier aspect que tâchent d’interroger les études ici réunies, en mettant l’accent sur le recyclage des sources et le croisement des voix textuelles (ce qui finit par « mettre en scène » une pluralité de visions sur les thématiques traitées), sur les phénomènes rhétoriques utilisés par les auteurs (apostrophes, commentaires, dialogues fictifs et apartés), et/ou sur les figures qui marquent la narration d’une polyphonie subjective.

The polygraphic status and the heterogeneous structure of the Histoire des deux Indes invite us to re-examine the methods and strategies employed by the editors, and lead us to read the text from a double perspective: that dictated by the historiographical tradition and that suggested, in parallel, by the intrusions of philosophical discourse. It is this latter aspect that the articles gathered here attempt to examine, focusing on the recycling of sources and the crossing of textual voices (which ends up "staging" a plurality of visions on the themes treated), on the rhetorical phenomena used by the authors (apostrophes, commentaries, fictitious dialogues and asides), and/or on the figures that mark the narrative with a subjective polyphony.

Dans une perspective innovante et interdisciplinaire (éthique, mythocritique, sociocritique, psychanalyse, théories du genre), des figures mythiques féminines et autres, révélatrices de notre regard sur le monde, sont ici analysées sous les aspects variés de leurs transformations dans la littérature, le cinéma et à travers des événements historiques de ce dernier siècle. Les treize auteures des essais qui composent ce volume, venues de dix pays et de quatre continents, présentent la manière dont les mythes grecs, bibliques, africains – parfois sources de nouveaux mythes nés de conflits ou traumatismes modernes – permettent de rendre visibles les paradigmes de pensée qui conditionnent les rapports humains, surtout la perception du corps encore sous l’emprise d’un imaginaire collectif soumis à la domination patriarcale.

Within an innovative and interdisciplinary framework including ethics, myth criticism, sociocriticism, psychoanalysis and gender theories, mythical figures, feminine and others that reveal the ways we perceive the world, are being analyzed in light of the various aspects pertaining to their transformations through the literature, cinema and historical events of this past century. The contributors of the thirteen essays that comprise the present volume, originating from ten countries and four continents, elaborate the manner in which Greek, Biblical and African myths, occasionally generating new myths borne out of contemporary conflicts or traumas – unveil the belief systems that define human relationships, in particular the perception of the body, still subject to a collective imaginary conditioned by the patriarchal supremacy.
This book offers an in-depth study of iconic literary narratives and images of religious transformation and secularisation in the Netherlands during the 1960s and 1970s. Jesseka Batteau shows how Gerard Reve, Jan Wolkers and Maarten ’t Hart texts and performances can be understood as instances of religious and post-religious memory with a broad public impact. They contributed to a widely shared perspective on the Dutch religious past and a collective understanding of what secularisation consists of. This uniquely interdisciplinary approach combines insights from literary studies, memory studies, media studies and religious studies and traces the complex dynamics of the circulation of memory and meaning between literary texts, mass media and embodied performances within a post-religious society.
