Auf Anfrage des karthagischen Diakons Quodvultdeus verfasst Augustin in den Jahren vor seinem Tod einen Häretikerkatalog, in dem er insgesamt 88 Gruppierungen unter dem Oberbegriff der Häresie klassifiziert und beschreibt. Die vorliegende Monographie liefert einen fortlaufenden, detaillierten Kommentar dieses bislang wenig bearbeiteten häresiographischen Kompendiums. Die Analyse wird geleitet von der Frage nach Augustins literarischen Quellen (Ps.-Epiphanius, Filastrius, Ps.-Hieronymus u.a.) sowie nach seinem eigenständigen Beitrag in der Verarbeitung des Quellenmaterials. Genuin augustinische Strategien der Häresiographie werden so herausgearbeitet. Dabei rückt verstärkt Augustins spezifische Kenntnis der jeweiligen Gruppierungen vor dem Hintergrund seines eigenen antihäretischen Engagements und seines Gesamtwerks in den Blick. This book’s central argument is that oral forms of collective memory in Christian-Muslim engagements in orally-oriented societies are more effective than interreligious dialogue through the dominant written text based on elite-based concepts. The approach has dominated interreligious interactions. From the perspective of the social scientific study of interreligious encounters & collective memory in folklore studies, this book explores how orality and social remembrance articulated through folksong, oral narrative, and ritual performance strengthen interreligious engagements in the post-conflict society. The approach proposed in this book reclaims interreligious engagements based on the local Indonesian dynamic preserved in ritual performance, oral narrative, and folksong. This method articulates a contextualized interreligious engagement grounded in local culture.

Were mid-Tudor evangelicals roaring lions or meek lambs? Did they struggle with a minority complex, or were they comfortable with their position of political ascendancy under Edward VI? How did their theological blueprint of the ‘True Church’ fit their temporal realities? By relocating the Book of Common Prayer at the centre of the English Reformation, Stephen Tong gives new significance to two underacknowledged drivers of reform: ecclesiology and liturgy. Edwardian reformers caused a sensation in England by engaging with these questions, which spilled over into Ireland, and continued to cast a shadow over subsequent generations of the English Protestants.

This book argues that Romans credited certain living persons with the capacity to function as cult statues, that is, as images and vessels of the divine. After addressing the cultural context that produced the idea that humans can become images of the divine, the text shows how emperors, bishops, and others imitated the aesthetic, immobility, and material setting of statuary to establish themselves as iconic and how their role as mediators with the divine was eventually transferred to new categories of material objects, such as relics and icons. The figure of the iconic person thus is shown to have bridged the cult statues of Antiquity with the new mechanisms of interaction with the divine that Christians used for the following millennium. By integrating living persons in the art historical analysis of the spaces and advocating for the need to consider the animation of artefacts together with the reification of bodies, this study marks an important development in the study of the past.

This book presents an overview together with a detailed examination of the life and ideas of a major thinker and protagonist of the first half of the fourteenth century, Richard FitzRalph (1300-60, Armachanus). A central figure in debates at Oxford, Avignon and Ireland, FitzRalph is perhaps best-known for his central role in the poverty controversies of the 1350s. Each of the chapters collected here sheds a different perspective on the many aspects of FitzRalph’s life and works, from his time at the University of Oxford, his role as preacher and pastoral concerns, his contacts with the Eastern Churches, and finally his case at the Papal court against the privileges granted to the Franciscans. His influence and later reputation is also examined.

No one mentions Syriac, – a dialect of the Aramaic language Jesus spoke –, without referring to Sebastian P. Brock, the Oxford scholar and teacher who has written and taught about everything Syriac, even reorienting the field as The Third Lung of early Christianity (along with Greek and Latin). In 2018, Syriac scholars world-wide gathered in Sigtuna, Sweden, to celebrate with Sebastian his accomplishments and share new directions. Through essays showing what Syriac studies have attained, where they are going, as well as some arenas and connections previously not imagined, flavors of the fruits of laboring in the field are offered.

Das Buch untersucht den Wandel des Katholizismus in der Bundesrepublik und fragt nach seinen Beiträgen zur postmodernen Gesellschaft: Was kommt nach dem Milieu? Wie werden die Veränderungen politisch gestaltet, wie (er-)leben sie die Menschen? Welche semantischen Verschiebungen, welche spezifischen Handlungsweisen und welche emotionalen Erfahrungen sind in diesem Zusammenhang von Bedeutung? Im Blick steht das vermeintlich rückständige Rheinland-Pfalz, als Brennglas dient die schrittweise Aufhebung der staatlichen Konfessionsschulen. Eindrucksvoll wird deutlich, dass gängige Zuschreibungen vom "Sog der Säkularisierung" oder der "Kirche im Gegenwind" schnell ins Leere laufen. Es werden viele Abschiede ausgerufen, aber nicht überall gibt es auch einen. Die ersten sehnen den Wandel herbei, die zweiten bekämpfen ihn erbittert, den dritten ist er egal. Nicht wenige können keinen Wandel erkennen und einige versuchen ihn zu nutzen, um dem Althergebrachten zu neuem Glanz zu verhelfen.
