Revisiting Trajectories in the Fourth-Century Christological Debates

In Antioch, Nicaea, and the Synthesis of Constantinople, Dragoș Andrei Giulea delineates a new map of the theological trajectories involved in the fourth-century Christological debates, and envisions the solution of Constantinople 381 as a synthesis of the two theoretical paradigms produced at the councils of Antioch 268 and Nicaea 325. The author argues that the main theological trajectories participating in the debate were the Antiochene, the Arian, the Nicene, the Homoian, and the pro-Nicene.
Giulea redefines the pro-Nicene theology, which dominated the discussions of Constantinople 381, as a synthesis of the most effective metaphysical categories of Antioch and Nicaea. Euro-Western descriptions of knowledge and its sources fall short of accommodating the spiritual, experiential terrain of the imagination. What of the embodied, affective knowing that characterizes Pentecostal epistemology, that is, the distinctive Pentecostal-Charismatic knowing derived from dreams and visions (D/Vs)? In this stunning ethnographic work, the author merges African scholarship with an investigation of what visioners say about the significance of their D/Vs for Christian life and spirituality. Revealing data showcases case studies for their biblical and theological articulations of the value of D/V experiences and affirms them as sources of Pentecostal love, ministerial agency, and the missionary impulse.

The necessary "Great Transformation" does not primarily lack ecological knowledge, technical possibilities and political decisions, but rather a deeper-seated change in basic cultural attitudes. Against this background, this book develops a systematic reflection on environmental ethics. At first, the eye is sharpened for typical patterns, blind spots, but also tasks and competencies of ethics in the complex crisis discourse. In the theological approach, dynamic, creation-theological and interreligious aspects of eco-ethics are taken up as well as developments in the teaching authority, which have found a new level of quality in the encyclical Laudato si'. In this way, the book explores the nascent research field of ecological transformation environmental ethics and offers a comprehensive compendium textbook of environmental ethics knowledge.

The volume consists of four parts, each devoted to a particular field of research. Part one addresses the general impact of Social Memory Theory for the New Testament. The second part analyzes how Social Memory Theory adds to exploring the phenomenon of (biblical) intertextuality as a strategy for negotiating Early Christian identity and the third part investigates how New Testament pseudepigraphy provides a different approach for understanding the negotiation and formation of Christian identities. Finally, part four provides an outlook how the hermeneutical approach can enhance Patristic research. The ten essays originate from discussions about Social Memory Theory and the New Testament at international conferences, three of them are translations of German contributions, while two are published for the first time in this volume.

Seit seiner Priesterweihe war Augustinus auch direkt in Hippo mit dem Donatismus konfrontiert. Die in diesem Band vereinten Schriften sind zwei frühe antidonatistische Schriften, die erhalten sind. In der Schrift De unitate ecclesiae ad catholicos fratres (Über die Einheit der Kirche an die katholischen Brüder) reagiert Augustin auf die Argumente des Donatisten Petilian und entwickelt eine umfassende, biblisch gestützte antidonatistische Kirchenlehre. Dabei entwickelt er Argumente weiter, die er bereits in dem Psalmus contra partem Donati (Psalm gegen die Donatisten) entwickelt hatte, größtenteils im Anschluss an die Argumente des Optatus von Mileve. Der Psalmus ist zugleich das einzige poetische Werk Augustins, das erhalten ist. Beide Schriften geben einen interessanten Einblick in die Debatten über die Kirchenspaltung in Nordafrika, die schon das ganze 4. Jahrhundert bestimmt hatte und Augustin mehrere Jahrzehnte begleiten sollte.
