Now available in paperback, this second, revised volume in the Fauna Malesiana Handbook series gives an extensive overview of larval development in 125 fish families, many of which are important from both ecological and fishery perspectives. The families described are from the center of global marine biodiversity: the tropical Indo-Pacific, a region rich in coral reefs, as well as mangrove, estuarine, and coastal shelf habitats. This handbook covers fishes from all these habitats and not only documents their ontogeny, but also provides the means to identify their extraordinarily diverse larvae to the level of family. As well as detailed descriptive text, the book offers a wealth of instructive and detailed illustrations (219 plates, each consisting of approximately 4 figures) and an illustration-based identification guide. Cyclophora,
Scopula and
Idaea are covered. Especially
Idaea with more than 100 species occuring in Europe, has caused a lot of problems to identify, but based on the many specimens illustrated on the 24 colour plates, the species of this genus can be identified much easier now. Apart from its largest species, the genus
Idaea is illustrated in 1.5 times natural size. The remaining Sterrhinae are in natural size on the colour plates. On additional black and white photos for species which are difficult to identify, their differential characters are pointed out with arrows. Three new species and three new subspecies are described. A map with the European distribution is given, and with dots for verified specimens. Finally there are line drawings of male and female genitalia of all species and also this volume contains a systematic catalogue of the European species and including those of the neighbouring regions such as North Africa, Macaronesia, Turkey, and the Middle East.

All major crop plants have been subjected to genetic improvement, either by selection and propagation or by breeding. Bamboos have received scant attention from plant breeders despite their importance as crop plants due to their unpredictable and uncontrollable flowering habits and to a limited understanding of genetic variation amongst the existing species. The potential for new, improved bamboo hybrids is enormous. The demand for bamboo is increasing worldwide and the diversity of uses to which it is put is growing steadily. Increases in demand can be met by increasing the areas of bamboo plantations, but improvements in the quality of raw bamboo can only be met by selection and breeding.
Professor Zhang Guangchu of Guangdong Forestry Research Institute has worked on bamboo hybridization for almost thirty years and has amassed a wide range of skills and experience. She has produced hybrid bamboos that are now being grown commercially in South China. INBAR recently invited her to distil her experiences and make them available to a wider audience and this manual is the result. The manual refers primarily to the bamboos of southern China where the author is based, but the principles and techniques are applicable worldwide.

Most non-malignant chronic pain is medically unexplained. But that has not stopped doctors from trying. These improvisations at the limit of medical knowledge offer a way into the history of neurosis.
Lesionless pain was a paradigmatic problem of clinical method after 1800. It was central to the emergence of neuralgia, spinal irritation, surgical hysteria, railway spine and hysterical conversion. Evidence of a nineteenth-century tradition of theoretical discussion about the relationship between chronic pain and pathological lesion, trauma, mood, memory and personality is brought together here for the first time. A wide range of medical texts is surveyed, including pathology, surgery, physiology, neurology, psychiatry and psychoanalysis. We see the medical gaze first penetrate the tissues of the body then extend to examine the language and mental state of the pain patient.

This book develops a remarkable axiological characterology of healthy personality types, distortions, and styles of sexual attachment. It synthesizes the author's profound understanding of human nature, recent psychological interpretations of the ancient Enneagram, and insights into connections between values and psychology drawn from Robert S. Hartman's formal theory of value. It shows how personalities are differentiated by the ways they manifest Hartman's three dimensions of value: intrinsic, extrinsic, and systemic. It shows how these correlate with nine personality types identified by Enneagram interpreters. Human personalities differ with respect to the ways in which intrinsic, extrinsic, and systemic values are developed (or not developed) and ordered (as dominant or subordinate) within individuals by nature and/or nurture. The book shows how personality distortions are grounded in perversions of value orientation.
