At the Margins of Academia offers a broad approach to the challenge of academic labor precarity and the ever-growing academic migration from Turkey to European academic labor markets, based on the author’s own experiences and on in-depth interviews with the exiled Peace Academics. To this aim, it provides a detailed analysis of the systemic background of precariousness, the specifities of the case of the exiled Academics for Peace with regard to the precarization of academic labor force in general, and the socio-emotional expressions of being kept ‘in reserve’, drawing on the exiled academics’ own narratives.
The book consists of 5 chapters that start with the structural background of precariousness, then proceed to set a framework for understanding the relation between precariousness and subjectivity, and present insights on that relation with the help of the references made to individual and focus group interviews conducted with 11 academics in exile.
A Philosophy for Communism: Rethinking Althusser Panagiotis Sotiris attempts a reading of the work of the French philosopher centered upon his deeply political conception of philosophy. Althusser’s endeavour is presented as a quest for a new practice of philosophy that would enable a new practice of politics for communism, in opposition to idealism and teleology. The central point is that in his trajectory from the crucial interventions of the 1960s to the texts on aleatory materialism, Althusser remained a communist in philosophy. This is based upon a reading of the tensions and dynamics running through Althusser’s work and his dialogue with other thinkers. Particular attention is paid to crucial texts by Althusser that remained unpublished until relatively recently.
This collective volume examines how EU citizenship reconstructs in unexpected ways what citizenship as a status means and stands for. EU citizenship can neither be accurately described as a citizenship status similar to national citizenship, nor as an immigration one. The book examines the tension at the heart of attempts to grasp the nature of EU citizenship as supranational status in relation to family reunification, social rights and expulsion. It shows that while events such as Brexit stress the importance of EU citizenship, the construction of supranational citizenship along the axis of non-discrimination and equality remains a work in progress that requires the efforts of all actors involved - institutions, implementing authorities, courts and citizens.

Activist Identity Development of Transgender Social Justice Activists and Educators introduces an anti-oppressive, critical and intersectional approach to social justice activism and education, and adult education for social change. This book examines how state governments, laws, policies, institutions, and systems of dominant hegemonic ideologies, such as education systems, the legal systems, and their gatekeepers influence the social position and epistemic agency of transgender and gender non-conforming people (TGNC), therefore shaping their social justice activist and educator identity development. The research was conducted with eight TGNC social justice activists and educators from eight different countries, who were at the time in leadership positions in organizations working on the advancement of LGBTQI human rights.

Quel est le point commun entre un chérif musulman (descendant du prophète Mohammed) de la confédération Aït Ba’amran des tribus du Sud-Ouest marocain et un Indigène animiste d’Amazonie brésilienne ? À la surprise de l’ethnologue, tous deux sont affiliés à une ascendance juive. Cette judaïté, conçue davantage comme une origine que comme une pratique religieuse, participe à préciser le lien au sol des générations actuelles. La mise en regard de deux cas ethnographiques permet une discussion plus large sur la multiplicité des origines en contexte migratoire dans le temps long. La judaïté des origines participe à asseoir pleinement l’inscription actuelle des populations au sein d’un espace marqué par l’histoire de la construction des Etats empires portugais et espagnols.
Neste artigo reflicto sobre as repercussões da “descoberta” dos Marranos em Portugal, no princípio do século XX, na questão do resgate da identidade brasileira pelos judeus do Brasil. Esta “descoberta” despertou grande interesse de especialistas da História dos Judeus, de cientistas sociais, e também da Média europeia. Mas foi igualmente alvo do interesse de pessoas que, no outro lado do Atlântico, tentavam comprovar a presença de uma população de origem judaica desde os tempos coloniais em Terra de Santa Cruz e, portanto, o seu papel fundamental para a construção da colónia que se tornaria o país Brasil.
