In his book The Enigma of Art. On the provenance of Artistic Creation Gino Zaccaria offers a philosophical meditation on the issue of art in light of its original sense. The book shows how this sense can be fully understood provided that our thinking, on the one hand, returns to the ancient Greek world where it must heed, in particular, the voice and hints of the goddess Athena, and, on the other hand, listens to “artist-thinkers” close to our current epoch, like Cézanne, Boccioni or van Gogh. What will finally appear will not be an abstract notion of art, but its enigma; that is to say, the promise of a conversion of art itself towards its "other beginning".

Dans Les écritures de l'image par Jean-Philippe Toussaint Claire Olivier s’intéresse à la manière dont l’écrivain, cinéaste, photographe et plasticien Jean-Philippe Toussaint, expérimente la puissance des images pour composer en ce début du XXIe siècle une œuvre singulière fondée sur des relations transesthétiques. Elle s’attache à montrer que les écritures toussaintiennes, quel que soit le médium choisi, sont visuelles. Elles donnent à voir, à penser, à rêver et composent un « essai-image ». Ce dernier constitue une forme toujours en devenir qui s’appuie sur un processus de « sémentation », néologisme qui désigne une véritable alchimie du signe où le sens est continuellement réactivé par des contextualisations différentes. Sur le mode de l’opera operta, cet « essai-image » toussaintien déploie ses séductions réflexives comme romanesques.

In Les écritures de l'image par Jean-Philippe Toussaint, Claire Olivier is concerned with the way the writer, filmmaker, photographer and plastic artist Jean-Philippe Toussaint experiments with the power of images to create, in the 21st century, a singular work based on transaesthetic relationships. She endeavours to demonstrate that toussaintian writings are visual, independently from the chosen medium. They allow to see, think, dream and compose an “image-essay”. The latter forms a shape always in the making, relying on a “sémentation” process, neologism designating a true sign alchemy where the meaning is constantly revived through different contextualisations. On the model of the opera operta, this toussaintian “image-essay” deploys its reflective seductions as novelistic.
Women, Media, and Colonial Modernity in the Interwar Years

The East Asian Modern Girl reports the long-neglected experiences of modern women in East Asia during the interwar period. The edited volume includes original studies on the modern girl in Taiwan, Korea, Manchuria, Japan, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, which reveal differentiated forms of colonial modernity, influences of global media and the struggles of women at the time. The advent of the East Asian modern girl is particularly meaningful for it signifies a separation from traditional Confucian influences and progression toward global media and capitalism, which involves high political and economic tension between the East and West. This book presents geo-historical investigations on the multi-force triggered phenomenon and how it eventually contributed to greater post-war transformations.
Pictorial and Literary Transformations in Various Media, 1400–1800
This volume explores early modern recreations of myths from Ovid’s immensely popular Metamorphoses, focusing on the creative ingenium of artists and writers and on the peculiarities of the various media that were applied. The contributors try to tease out what (pictorial) devices, perspectives, and interpretative markers were used that do not occur in the original text of the Metamorphoses, what aspects were brought to the fore or emphasized, and how these are to be explained. Expounding the whatabouts of these differences, the contributors discuss the underlying literary and artistic problems, challenges, principles and techniques, the requirements of the various literary and artistic media, and the role of the cultural, ideological, religious, and gendered contexts in which these recreations were produced.

The old practices of interpretation have been exhausted, and the humanities and social sciences are facing a crisis. Is there a way out of the labyrinth of reading? In this book, Professor Neuman presents a challenging approach to interpreting texts and reading literature through the spectacles of conceptual mathematics. This approach strives to avoid the simplicity of a quantitative approach to the analysis of literature as well as both the relativistic and the ideological dangers facing a qualitative reading of a text. The approach is introduced in a rigorous and accessible manner and woven with insights gained from various fields. Taking us on a challenging journey from Ovid’s Metamorphoses to Nick Cave’s The Death of Bunny Munro, the book shows how we may gain a deeper understanding of literature and the aesthetic experience of reading.
In the present work, a legal philosopher (Angela Condello) and a literaray scholar (Tiziano Toracca) develop the idea that a comparison between law and literature must be framed starting from the modes in which law and literature function. In this sense, they read law and literature as arts of compromising characterized by an analogous and yet, at the same time, profoundly different structure. Both, in fact, mediate conflicts between norms and transgressions, and more precisely between a principle of normativity (repression), on the one hand; and a principle of counternormativity (repressed), on the other hand. Through a progression in three steps, aimed at clarifying some peculiarities of law (1) and literature (2), by referring to examples of their interaction (3), the authors finally sketch some relevant hypotheses on why a placement across these two arts of compromising suggests some theoretical itineraries on their threshold.

In this concluding chapter, I explain why literature is not a simple form of entertainment; provide an overview of how to understand a novel in depth; show how the artistic imagination is formed through non-trivial similarities, comparisons and inferences triggered by a text; weave a link from a cartoon by Raphael to the Stabat Mater; and conclude with a call for a deep and modest reading of literature.
