This book is based on and—apart from some minor corrections and an added index—corresponds with my same-titled doctoral dissertation, which I submitted in late 2017 and defended in early 2018 at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.

The book is written in American English. As far as punctuation—especially in relation to quotes—and style (headline capitalization, etc.) are concerned, I follow the guidelines of the Chicago Manual of Style (16th edition). In particular, I enclose periods and commas in closing quotation marks, whether double or single, for the purposes of improved readability.

For references to the published works of Wittgenstein, I use the established scribal abbreviations (›PG‹ for the Philosophical Grammar, ›PI‹ for the Philosophical Investigations, ›PR‹ for the Philosophical Remarks, and ›Z‹ for the Zettel).
