Index

The 1669 Latin edition has a fairly extensive, but for modern users somewhat unsystematic index in the early modern style. In the spirit of Hoornbeeck’s book, and in order to keep it manageable, this index focuses on people: heathens, authors, voyagers, missionaries etc. Peoples and geographical place names are grouped together by (sub)continent. Names of characters in texts, and of persons mentioned only in passing have been left out. Religions are indexed only when they are not specific to one people. Gods and religious ceremonies are not indexed, as they are usually specific to peoples, but limited lists of religious phenomena and rituals are included, as are some cultural forms and concepts (under modern names), those that appear to have been of special interest to Hoornbeeck.
