This book project has come a very long way, and many individuals have contributed to its creation. At Brill, I would especially like to thank Julian Deahl, who first had the idea for a companion to Joachim of Fiore. Most especially I’m indebted to Ivo Romein; without his persistent encouragement and imperturbable faith in the project this volume would have never been completed. Charles Bellitto and copy-editor Josh Pennington made significant contributions to the production of the manuscript.

I thank the two anonymous reviewers, who provided valuable feedback and meaningful criticism. I’m grateful for the enthusiastic support of the excellent ma and Ph.D. students at Central European University, especially Rachel Mattair and Harrison King, who proofread many of the chapters and made excellent suggestions for improvement. I would like to express my utmost gratitude to my editorial assistants Alexandra Medzibrodszky and Martin Pjecha, who produced the final version of the manuscript and most of the index and bibliography.
