Cover illustration: Sellers of indulgences. Starting at the center top and proceeding counterclockwise, the woodcut shows the (red) cross which was erected in front of the altar in the main church of the town where the indulgence was being preached at the moment. It is flanked by the papal coat of arms (left) and those of the current pope Leo X, a Medici (right). At the foot of the cross stands the collection chest for the indulgence campaign, one of whose three locks is shown. To the left of the cross, a Dominican friar is proclaiming the indulgence, showing a transsumpt of the papal bull. In the lower right-hand corner a distributor of confessionalia is shown filling out a printed form, to which he will attach ready-made seals (lying ready for use on the platter in front of him). As shown by their swords or fur collars, those purchasing confessionalia were affluent. Finally, above that, a Franciscan friar is shown permitting an affluent penitent (wearing a fur collar) to pay into the collection box but warding off a (poor) peasant, identifiable by his flail, thus preventing him from doing so.
