This investigation—which was defended, in a slightly different form, as a dissertation at the Faculty of Theology of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, on 5 September 2019—is part of the results of the Project “New Testament Conjectural Emendation: A Comprehensive Enquiry.” The Project was hosted by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2010–2016), and sponsored by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).

I would like to thank Bert Jan Lietaert Peerbolte, leader of the Project and supervisor of the dissertation, for inviting me to apply for a position in the research team that he has so enthusiastically led throughout the years; for finding new solutions to the problems occurring along the way; and for his critical reading of the work in progress and his most valuable insights. I especially express my deepest gratitude to him for the trust he placed in me during this long path. I am indebted to Jan Krans, initiator of the Project and co-supervisor, “beyond what is written.” I would like to thank him for all the sources he provided me with; for his patience with technological issues I could not solve; for his ἀκριβία that equals that of the best textual critics, and the new insights into all the issues we discussed. I am also thankful to Bart Kamphuis, my direct colleague in the Project, for his example and dear friendship.

I express my gratitude to the members of the Reading Committee (Jan Bloemendaal, Ineke Sluiter, Matthias Smallbrugge, Mirjam van Veen, Joseph Verheyden) for their comments.

My thanks go also to the staff of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and University of Leiden Special Collections Libraries, as well as to the curators of the Special Collections of Basel University Library, and Rotterdam Public Library, for their support.

As this is a subject that crosses different disciplines, I owe thanks to several scholars from different fields for providing me with material and their expertise. Mirjam van Veen and Peter Gurry have sent me their articles before publication. Francesca Schironi has provided me with some of her publications that I could not find. An-Ting Yi, Jan Krans, and Bert Jan Lietaert Peerbolte have shared with me two articles on Richard Bentley before publication. Davide Senocrate has helped me with some ancient passages of difficult interpretation.

The English of this book has benefited from the attentive revisions of Anthony Runia in its first part, and of Helen Pears in its second part. Any remaining language errors are of course my responsibility.

I am very grateful to Eldon Jay Epp and Bart Ehrman for the honour they gave me in accepting this investigation in the prestigious NTTSD series. I am also thankful to Marjolein van Zuylen, my editor at Brill, and to An-Ting Yi for his help in the compiling of the index.

This publication was made possible by financial support of the Van Coeverden Adriani Stichting.

This investigation would have never seen its end without the support of my beloved ones. My parents and parents-in law, my sister, and a number of close friends have always been there, even when far away. The revision of this book has been carried out in the village where I grew up, in Italy. I am very grateful to my parents for taking care of Benjamin during our stay, notably during the COVID-19 emergency. I have been involved with the Faculty of Religion and Theology within the VU University for a number of years. The University motto is “Auxilium nostrum in nomine Domini” (“Our help is in the name of the Lord”). I cannot but thank the Lord for giving me the opportunity to work with and to receive the generous help of all the people I have mentioned above (and of those I did not mention), for giving me the strength to finish this project, and for surrounding me meanwhile with a wonderful family, beyond my expectations. I dedicate this book to my beloved husband, Marko, and to our little Benjamin. Marko, thank you for your unrelenting support all through these years, for patiently waiting for its end, and for being at my side through all the vicissitudes of life. Benjamin, thank you for being there and for all the joy you give us.
