Index of Selected People and Places

Explanation of the Index People: this index gives the correct/official names and titles of individuals encountered by Pococke during his travels, with his own idiosyncratic spelling in brackets. It also states the nationality of non-British people, if known, and either the place(s) at which Pococke met them or the centre at which they were normally based. The index also lists the names of other people mentioned in the correspondence, such as Pococke’s friends and acquaintances in England and Ireland. These entries give their country (or occasionally their city) of residence and their occupation, if relevant. Places: the index lists a selection of the places visited by Pococke during his travels. Each place is listed by its modern name, if known, with any contemporary or ancient versions of the name, or any misspellings, appearing in brackets. Most entries relate to his experiences in these centres; for any general accounts of the main centres visited, the reader is directed to the chapters containing his “Accounts”.
