Conventions
Most of the abbreviations of the titles of works by ancient writers used throughout the book may be found in The SBL Handbook of Style, edited by Patrick H. Alexander et al. (Peabody, Mass.: Hendrickson Publishers, 1999).
For transcribing Syriac, I use a slightly modified version of the simplified transcription system outlined by Sebastian P. Brock and adopted by the Library of Congress.1
The Peshitta version of the Old Testament is quoted according to the edition The Old Testament in Syriac according to the Peshiṭta Version, 18 vols. (Leiden: Brill, 1966–2019).
Unless indicated otherwise, all translations of Syriac and other ancient texts in the book are mine.
The description is available online at https://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/romanization/syriac.pdf.
