Chinese characters are given for names of individuals, places, and important terms under discussion. Characters are not provided for pseudonyms or names of well-known places. In general, footnoted references do not include Chinese characters; see the bibliography for full Chinese citations for articles, chapters, or books in Chinese. When a pseudonym is used for a person, place, or organization, it is retained in the bibliography.
The names of contributors to this volume are given with the surname in capital letters. When Chinese names are referenced in the text, typically they are given in the normal Chinese order of surname, given name. When Chinese scholars who publish in English are referenced, however, the name under which they publish will typically be used (which often may be written in the order given name, surname). For example, Fenggang Yang (given name, surname) will be used in the text when referring to publications in English, but Yang Fenggang also appears when there is discussion of his works in Chinese.
When Chinese translations of English scholarship are referenced, both the English and Chinese (pinyin) titles are given in the first instance in each chapter. Subsequent footnotes only include the original English citation. To make this more useful to an English-reading audience, all page citations refer to the English editions, as do all quotations.
The rate of 1 usd = 6.5 rmb is used to convert monetary amounts in all chapters. This is based on the average conversion rate in 2015. In some instances, an approximate usd amount is given.
All biblical citations follow the New International Version (niv).
