Wherever possible, we reference English translations and editions of the works cited in this volume. In cases where no English translation or edition for a given primary or secondary source exists, all translations were undertaken from the French (unless otherwise indicated in the footnotes). In a select few instances, English translations or editions of a certain text are available, but we elected not to use them and instead to translate from the French. The reasons for this decision vary with respect to the work in question; foremost among them are the following: the English version of a given source omitted some or all of the material included and referenced in the French, making it difficult or impossible to switch to the English text; switching to the English translation would have involved a prohibitive amount of labour; dissatisfaction with the quality of the extant English version(s). Any errors in translation are entirely my own.
