Betty’s work on textiles, for which she is a major source of reference, has been mentioned by other contributors. I know her however not only from this, but as a very efficient organiser on the excavations of the Anglo-Saxon site at Jarrow. Here she ran the ‘finds’ reception, and was a stern monitor of whether the excavators had filled in their background data adequately!
For anyone working in the field of Anglo-Saxon studies her publications, especially on ‘The Crucifixion’, are essential points of reference, and she is also the recognised consultant for any new discoveries in this field. I am personally indebted to her expertise in my own work on Anglo-Saxon sculpture, and would like to record my gratitude for her informed support.
