Conventions
Information on the conventions for citing Dai Nihon Bukkyō zensho, Dai Nihon zokuzōkyō, and Taishō shinshū daizōkyō is provided in the list of abbreviations that follows this section. All other collections are cited by fascicle number and page number(s). Abbreviations are used in the main text, endnotes, and the table in Appendix B.
The raw data for the main monastic–secular network that is presented in this study is available in the accompanying dataset, as described in Appendix C. The dataset includes information on over 3,000 interactions among some 800 individuals. These interactions can be graphically visualized in open-source Social Network Analysis tools such as Gephi and Cytoscape.
All years are converted from traditional reign dates to the corresponding single Western calendar year. Months and days are not converted. All dates are CE unless otherwise stated. When no dates are provided for an individual, this indicates that both date of birth and date of death are unknown.
Chinese characters are provided for personal names, geographical locations, era names, and titles of original sources at first appearance. These translations are also included in the bibliography, along with the Chinese characters for all titles mentioned in the book. Names of geographical locations in Tang China are followed by corresponding contemporary province in brackets. All translations are my own unless otherwise stated.
