Acknowledgements
This book is a revised version of my doctoral dissertation (Valdeson 2021), based on research that I conducted as a PhD student at Stockholm University during the years 2016–2021 and for which the complete data set can be accessed here:
I would like to thank my supervisors, Cecilia Falk and Jan Svanlund, for all our discussions and all their support during my time as a PhD student. Sadly, Cecilia is no longer with us. I hope she would have been proud I turned this thing into a proper book in the end.
I am also indebted to many people at Uppsala University, where I obtained my bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Niklas Edenmyr, who supervised my bachelor’s thesis in linguistics, introduced me to Croft’s Radical Construction Grammar and taught me the importance of always retaining a typological perspective. David Håkansson supervised my bachelor’s thesis in Scandinavian languages and, in the process, taught me the essence of how to do linguistic research.
Several people have read and commented on earlier versions of this text, including Maria Bylin, Thomas Hörberg, Josefin Lindgren, Jan-Ola Östman and Tomas Riad. I have benefitted greatly from their comments. At my PhD defence, I had the pleasure of discussing the dissertation version of the text with opponent Elena Smirnova and committee members Marlene Johansson Falck, Ida Larsson and Benjamin Lyngfelt.
The two above-mentioned anonymous reviewers deserve special thanks for their committed and detailed reading of the manuscript, which helped me improve the text in many aspects. I am also deeply grateful to the series editor, Jóhanna Barðdal, for encouraging me to submit the manuscript in the first place and for her keen reading of the text during the final stages of completing this book. Many thanks also to Elisa Perotti at Brill, who has guided me through the process of preparing the manuscript for publication. Needless to say, all remaining inaccuracies are my own.
Finally, I wish to thank my wife Laura and my sons Vilhelm and Alvar for all their love and support. This book is for you.
