Cover illustration: The cover image represents Ulou, a string figure collected in South America. The figure was originally published by the Swedish ethnographer Stig Rydén in “South American string figures” (Göteborg’s Museum, Ethnographical Department, 1934). It was re-constructed by Canadian mathematician Ron Read in 1982 and published in the Bulletin of String Figures Association in that year. Read noted that the meaning of the word “Ulou” is uncertain but that the figure looks distinctly like a paw or paw print. Another Canadian mathematician Parker Glynn-Adey painted a watercolour of the figure in 2016 and it is with his permission that the painting of the figure Ulou appears on the cover of this book. The author acknowledges that the practices of colonisation are imbricated into this story. They are discussed further in the book.
