Many of the papers that appear in this volume originated in a conference in honor of Professor Israel Bartal that was hosted by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Zalman Shazar Center for Jewish History, Jerusalem, in cooperation with the Hebrew University’s Leonid Nevzlin Research Center for Russian and East European Jewry.
