Acknowledgements

It is our distinct pleasure to thank the different institutions and individuals who helped to bring this volume to fruition. Many of the papers that appear in this volume originated in a conference in honor of Professor Israel Bartal that was hosted by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Zalman Shazar Center for Jewish History, Jerusalem, in cooperation with the Hebrew University’s Leonid Nevzlin Research Center for Russian and East European Jewry. Generous support was also provided by the Marcell and Maria Roth Chair in the History and Culture of Polish Jewry at Bar-Ilan University as well as the Institute for the History of Polish Jewry and Israel-Poland Relations, and the Stephen Roth Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism and Racism at Tel Aviv University. We would also like to thank Avi Aronsky and Lelia Stadler for their assistance with various aspects of the publication process. We are also grateful to Mo and Dov Horowitz for granting us permission to publish one of the last essays written by their father, Elliott Horowitz, of blessed memory. Lastly, we would like to thank the different contributors to this volume for their engaging essays and constant cooperation.
