Acknowledgments
The present volume stems from the research project A New History of Fishes. A long-term approach to fishes in science and culture, 1550–1880. This project was funded by NWO (Dutch Research Council) and carried out at Leiden University Center for the Arts in Society (LUCAS) and at Naturalis Biodiversity Center. Thirteen contributions to this volume stem from the closing conference Towards a Cultural History of Early Modern Ichthyology (1500–1800) (Leiden University, 14–16 October 2021), and have been supplemented with eleven new contributions. We would like to thank Gera van Bedaf and Ivo Romein, both affiliated with Brill, for their advice and help with the material processing of the manuscript, in particular with regard to the many illustrations of this volume. We also thank Meredith McGroarty for her critical reading of several chapters of this volume. Finally, our thanks also go to the authors of this volume, who (although coming from very different disciplines, and accustomed to different methods of publishing) have stepped out of the comfort zone of their own discipline, and have managed to work together from a genuine interdisciplinary attitude.
