Acknowledgements
The authors are extremely grateful to the Institute of Advanced Study and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Durham University, who kindly funded the initial conference on the legacy of Plato’s Timaeus at Durham in March 2018, from which this collection originated, as part of the University’s interdisciplinary research initiative in 2017–18 on the theme of Fundamental Structures. We are also very grateful to the Durham Miners’ Association, who allowed us to use their Miners’ Hall in Redhills, Durham, as a venue for the conference at a time when industrial action by the University and Colleges Union prevented the use of university buildings.
We are also grateful to all the present contributors to this volume and to others who participated in the conference for their stimulating contributions to the theme, including especially the late Professor Sarah Broadie, who chaired the discussions, and those who gave papers at the conference not included this volume, namely Christian Frost, Carlos Steel, Gijsbert Jonkers, Nancy Vandeusen, and Andrew Briggs, as well as to others who participated in the discussions, including Hector Sequera-Mora, Kimberley Skelton, George Boys-Stones, and Philip Horky.
We are grateful to the anonymous readers for Brill and to the editor of the series Brill Studies in Intellectual History, Professor Han van Ruler, for their helpful and insightful comments and to the editorial board for permitting this book to be published in this series.
Lastly, but not least, this book would not have been possible without the efficient, patient, and courteous assistance of the team at Brill, particularly Arjan van Dijk, Ivo Romein, Wilma de Weert, and Simona Casadio.
