RKD
RKD-Netherlands Institute for Art History, is one of the world’s most important art historical research institutes. In the past years the RKD has been steadily building an infrastructure of related databases containing art historical knowledge and information. The platform which houses this infrastructure is named RKD Research, a digital meeting place for presenting, connecting and sharing art historical knowledge and information. The databases contain almost 5 million images.
RKD Research Tools
The research environment has a number of tools that make research more efficient and that will ensure more impressive results:
Visual search
- which also includes the ability to compare black-and-white images with colour images
Workspace with advanced viewer
- infinitely zoom in on images
- drag, rotate and flip images
- edit images: adjust contrast, colour, brightness, make them more or less transparent and adjust saturation
- crop images

- the ability to compare images next to each other
Planned future updates
Connect with other databases
- the ability to research images with IIIF format in your desktop, also the imported images from external sources
Compare images
- the ability to overlay images in a curtain viewer
- compare images relative to their actual size
