About Brill | Schöningh

For more than 170 years, Brill | Schöningh has represented qualified scholarly publications in the fields of history, theology, pedagogy, and linguistics and literary studies. Founded in 1847 by bookseller Ferdinand Schöningh in Paderborn, the publishing house remained in family ownership for well over a century until it joined Brill N.V. in 2017, thereby successfully transforming into a modern scholarly publisher with a wide range of digital publications.

The imprint publishes around 150 titles and several journals annually on program areas such as contemporary history, military history, and Eastern European history; Christian, Jewish, and Islamic theology; and Romance studies in the fields of linguistics and literature.

Brill | Schöningh is a member and shareholder of UTB, a successful German marketing and sales organization for university textbooks.

Upon the death of Prof Dr Peter Nitschke

We mourn the loss of our editor Prof. Dr Peter Nitschke, who died unexpectedly on 17 July 2024 at the age of 62. Peter Nitschke had been Professor of the ‘Science of Politics’ at the University of Vechta since 1997. His main areas of research included the field of political theory and the history of ideas, European integration and the political field of internal security and globalization. Since 2019, he had been Chairman of the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Erforschung des politischen Denkens (German Society for the Study of Political Thought).

We at Brill | Schöningh will remember him primarily as a dedicated editor and valued contributor. His final editorial work, the volume Perspektiven der Gerechtigkeit (Perspectives on Justice), is scheduled for publication in February 2025.

We would like to express our sympathy and heartfelt condolences to all relatives and mourners.
