About Brill | Schöningh

For more than 170 years, Brill | Schöningh has represented qualified scholarly publications in the fields of history, theology, pedagogy, and linguistics and literary studies. Founded in 1847 by bookseller Ferdinand Schöningh in Paderborn, the publishing house remained in family ownership for well over a century until it joined Brill N.V. in 2017, thereby successfully transforming into a modern scholarly publisher with a wide range of digital publications.

The imprint publishes around 150 titles and several journals annually on program areas such as contemporary history, military history, and Eastern European history; Christian, Jewish, and Islamic theology; and Romance studies in the fields of linguistics and literature.

Brill | Schöningh is a member and shareholder of UTB, a successful German marketing and sales organization for university textbooks.

Honoured with the Prix Gaïa

The jury of the ‘Prix Gaïa’ honours our author PD Dr Caroline Rothauge for her numerous fundamental studies on the Germanic historiography of time measurement. "Her cultural approach brilliantly combines archival sources and material artefacts." (Jury of the Prix Gaïa 2024)

Since April 2023, Caroline Rothauge has been Professor of 19th Century German and European History at the University of Hamburg.

In November 2023, her habilitation entitled Zeiten in Deutschland 1879–1919 (Times in Germany 1879-1919) was published by Brill | Schöningh, offering significant new insights into the concepts and ways of dealing with time around 1900. In May 2022, she already won the prize for the best habilitation at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt.
