This article consists of two parts. First, I provide a systematic refutation of Phyllis Trible's and Mieke Bal's contention that "the human" created in Gen. ii 7 is a neuter "earth creature" rather than a man. Next, in anticipation of likely objections, I raise certain epistemological questions regarding the nature of interpretation, proposing in the end the position of philosophical realism as a preferable alternative to the "reader-oriented" stance of most current feminist studies (and other so-called ideological approaches). The goal is not to settle this controversy, but to reintroduce a neglected philosophical position into the current debate.
