Values are the foundation that underlies the academic community. They are the basis for a specific set of principles generally accepted by its members. However, the values embraced by members are not always compatible, especially if said members hail from different cultural contexts. This chapter aims to identify a catalogue of values declared in the strategic documents of research universities from Germany and Poland to answer the question of how the specific values subscribed to affect the formation of academic communities at research universities operating in both countries. The study analysed a total of 24 strategic documents adopted by German and Polish universities partaking in respective national excellence programmes (the Excellence Initiative – Research University in Poland and the Excellence Strategy in Germany). Linguistic and qualitative analyses of their content facilitated the identification of the key values declared in Polish and German documents. Next, a comparative analysis with the use of the Competing Values Framework analytical model was conducted to characterise the types of organisational cultures themselves. The results revealed high compatibility in terms of preference for the respective values, as declared and defined by Polish and German universities. The observed differences were interpreted by taking into account the specificity of the two relevant national systems of higher education and science.

Challenges for Education Quality Management
Both HEIs and academic communities are affected by global trends that pose many challenges. This raises dilemmas related to community building and the cooperation between academic community members, which requires the exchange of experience, knowledge and information on different levels. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss new approaches and methods to manage the learning and teaching process, as well as methods and tools that support the development of the academic community.
