Mathieu Tillier’s important new book is a detailed presentation of his views on judgment in early Islam. I say ‘judgment’, and not ‘the judiciary’, because Tillier convincingly argues that this function was exercised by caliphs, provincial governors, and lower ranking officials for some time before the office of judge (qāḍī) emerged in the Marwanid period.
