Abstract:

Gadamer’s hermeneutics uses the transcendental method based on a priori presumptions, but Shusterman’s Dewey-inspired pragmatist philosophy (including somaesthetics) belongs to the tradition of naturalism that refuses the transcendental approach. This chapter, however, shows significant overlaps in their respective hermeneutic and pragmatist philosophies of art by articulating seven distinct similarities between them.
