The article presents a critical evaluation of the most detailed and the most important synthesis of the Semitic languages and linguistics entitled ‘The Semitic Languages’ edited by Stefan Weninger with collaboration of several leading specialists. It is rather natural that papers written by 67 authors dealing with almost all the Semitic languages represent different levels and some of the opinions are debatable but generally speaking this is a very useful and important book which will remain standard for a long time. The chapters on ‘Proto-Semitic Phonetics and Phonology’ and on ‘Proto-Semitic Lexicon’ by Leonid Kogan are particularly valuable.
