Abstract

Because of the immense popularity of HBO’s Game of Thrones (2011-2019), as well as Zack Snyder’s earlier film 300 (2006), historical fantasy, once an obscure genre, has recently attracted significant mainstream interest and has come to influence our understanding of the past. In conversation with critics such as Alison Landsberg, Astrid Erll, and Jason Mittell, this chapter explores the main strategies employed in depicting Christianity and Christian religious figures in recent historical fantasy television series with a particular emphasis on the effects of fantasy elements on the remediation of historical discourses within a genre that—unlike historical fiction—is not dependent on a logic of verisimilitude, but allows for divine (and demonic) intervention.
