This article investigates how contemporary news media, pamphlets and (slightly later) some more elaborate justificatory accounts of the events treated the death of Imperial Commander-in-Chief Wallenstein. The analysis of strategies of emplotment, structure and rhetorical devices of the relevant texts reveal how they all, regardless of the text’s position on either side of the religious and political divide, affirm the power of ‘history’ (fate, providence) to re-establish a balance that had previously been disturbed. A parallel analysis of Friedrich Schiller’s groundbreaking account of the Thirty Years War reveals how, 150 years later, the belief in the self-healing powers of history, the capacity of achieving its own equilibrium, still dominates his philosophy of history.

Fallstudien zu Wegen ins deutschsprachige kulturelle System
Der Band Literaturvermittlung um 1900 enthält neun Fallstudien, in denen an ausgewählten Beispielen die Voraussetzungen, Prozesse und Ergebnisse der Literaturvermittlung in den deutschen Sprachraum hinein untersucht werden. Als Ausgangssprachen/-literaturen werden das Jiddische, das Skandinavische, das Niederländische, das Französische und das Englische erfaßt; inhaltlich geht es um die anglo-irische Literatur, die Literatur des Ostjudentums, die flämisch-niederländische Literatur, Kontakte und Begegnungen von Vertretern dieser literarischen Systeme, Aufnahmevoraussetzungen im deutschen Sprachraum, Mechanismen der Anverwandlung und Übersetzung, die Etablierungsversuche von fremdsprachlich originierenden literarischen Figuren (wie Pierrot und Dandy) sowie um die Begegnung von Literaturvermittlern in fremdkultureller Umgebung.
Text into Image: Image into Text is a truly interdisciplinary publication. Whilst all of the contributions focus upon the central problem of the relationship between literature and the visual arts — one which has lost nothing of its fascination as the debate has expanded in numerous forms from antiquity into the realm of postmodern theory — they come from contributors working in a large number of different areas. Represented are academics from the worlds of German Studies, French Studies, English Studies, Art History and Film Studies. Given their backgrounds each of the contributors can offer a different perspective upon the core issue of translation between media, but perhaps most valuable is the com-bination of perspectives made possible by the arrangement of the volume into sections dealing with aspects of the image/text debate. In the same way that the volume gains by ranging across traditional disciplinary boundaries so it also gains from dealing with a wide range of historical material from — to take only one possible route — Baroque icono-graphy through Romantic imagery to Expressionist agony.
