Abstract

This chapter first offers a reconstruction of Olympiodorus’ views of poetic and philosophical myths and of the rationale behind the allegorical interpretations of myths. It then discusses Olympiodorus’ interpretation of the final myth of the Gorgias (523a–527e), and more specifically his interpretation of punishment. It finally addresses the question of esoteric communication in the Alexandrian commentator. The chapter argues that Olympiodorus’ hermeneutical practice and principles can still be of service for the interpretation of Plato today.
