Abstract
This paper focusses on the hip hop œuvre of Vasya Oblomov and Dubioza Kolektiv, in which markers of ‘old style’ are highlighted and discussed on different levels. Although hip hop has recently become productive and fashionable in both Russia and in Bosnia, these two bands clearly use signifiers that refer to previous traditions that are now obsolete. Nevertheless, sounds, genres and visual signifiers that ‘make it sound old’ not only recall outdated customs or political problems of the past; the songs also use these elements as a form of irony or estrangement in order to point to more serious problems of the present.
