This paper discusses the ongoing work of two International Law Association (ILA) Committees, one on Baselines under International Law of the Sea and a second on International Law and Sea Level Rise, through September 2017. It explores the legal issues raised by the effects of sea level rise on maritime zones and maritime boundaries and proposed solutions. The legal issues were explored at the 18th meeting of the UN’s Informal Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea in May 2017. The ILA Sea Level Rise Committee gave further consideration to them at an intersessional meeting in Lupod, Croatia, 14–16 September, and is expected to give further consideration to them during a third intersessional meeting in Singapore during the week of 12 March 2018 for preparation of its report to the August 2018 Sydney biennial ILA conference. The International Law Commission may undertake a study of the issues.
