Abstract

Situation specificity, i.e., different behavior of the same person in different situations, is an essential issue in social behavior yet it has been neglected in research; this also holds for moral and discoursive behavior. The paper begins with a definition of situation specificity; this includes the definition of the situation, which turns out to be more complex than typically assumed. Some elements of a theory of situation specificity are presented and then applied to the discoursive ethos. A questionnaire addressing five different possibilities of action in ten different situations in which the ethos is relevant was answered by four groups of 89 experienced teachers overall; each group had a different treatment, and there were three assessment times: before and after the treatment and one year later. An ANOVA shows that the interaction between person and situation accounts for most of the variance (21%); this is in accordance with the theory. Consequences both for the theory of situation specificity and for the analysis of discoursive ethos are discussed.
