Abstract

Houellebecq’s Submission presents a scenario in which the establishment of Islam as the official religion of France is the result of liberalism’s destruction of eros into nihilism. Islam is presented as providing a salve for the anomie of modern liberalism, which can be seen in the general satisfaction of French citizens with polygamy and the manner in which Islam restructures economic and political relations away from the frenetic individualism that characterizes modern life. Behind this concern for frenetic individualism is the author’s central preoccupation with the problem of eros in modern life, which shares some of the same concerns and diagnoses Plato had regarding eros and political life.
