Abstract

Wise futures are aspirations, practices and achievements and through these paths they gain and give value to their users. In essence, they take this powerful and inspiring concept of wisdom and apply it to the setting up of (wise) visions and purposes, the making of (wise) decisions, the arguing of (wise) purposeful intentions and seeking of (wise) goals. It is through the enactment of practice wisdom that we see the true essence of the purpose of this book to create a positive future. The shaping of wise futures takes the path of people seeking wisdom and wise action in their own lives and on behalf of all living things. It may be that wise futures are pursued within the practice (perhaps professional, paradigmatic or artistic practice) that is shaped by knowledges and practices of their deep purpose and practice frameworks.

As we explore our various and changing futures we seek to inform their wise underpinning/substance and to enable wise practice development. It is also to be hoped that we are aiming to make our worlds better places to live in. This pursuit of wise futures includes the support of living futures for cultural and societal communities, for work groups and practice populations (like professions and labour markets), local communities and societies. As well as these practical goals of shaping a multitude of living realities through wisdom perspectives and actions, future realisations of wisdom look at living wisdom itself as an evolution. The shaping of wise futures is a both a means and end. This chapter and the book celebrate valuing wise futures as this outline portrays.

Abstract

Practical wisdom can be interpreted as “the right way to do the right thing”, or perhaps, avoiding the definite article and its certainty; right ways of doing right things. In this chapter a model for shaping wise futures is presented. It explores wise practice dimensions and drivers that are shaping wise practice futures.
