The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate the foundational, relational, and transformational phases of internationalization 1.0 (knowledge foundation), 2.0 (relational phase) and 3.0 (transformational phase) in the context of China-U.S. collaborations by a U.S. business school. The chapter begins with a brief history and partnership structure of a case example of a bilateral collaboration and describes the partnership’s gradual progression from a foundational approach to a relational, mutually beneficial, and transformative partnership. In this chapter, we identify opportunities and challenges of the partnership and explore themes and patterns that continue to emerge today. We then analyze, compare and contrast cultural strategies and lessons learned from this partnership that others might gain deeper insight into their own China-U.S. collaborations and advance progress.
