This paper analyses how a text world is built, how it relates to the cognitive and cultural models of the real world and the role of metaphors in this construction. Because the processes by which we construct worlds, whether real or fictional, are automatic, we are usually unaware of them, but the construction of a fantastic text world, where the usual cognitive, cultural and social models do not apply, will allow us to evidence the role of metaphors in that construction. In order to do, several metaphors from a Fantasy novel are collected and analysed so that the megametaphor and the most basic image schema underlying the text are revealed. Finally, the question will be addressed of whether the final representation of the text world reinforces or refreshes the readers’ previous schemas of knowledge and so affects their perspective on and their interpretation of the real world.
