The complex of beliefs that historians variously refer to as millenarianism, millennialism, chiliasm, or tausendjähriges Reich holds that this broken, fallen, imperfect, even evil-ridden world will be transformed into a perfect world of justice, peace, abundance, and mutual love. Various forms and types can be distinguished among and within millennialist thought, eschatological beliefs, and apocalyptic expectations. Apocalyptic millennialism, that is millennial hopes activated by a sense of their imminent fulfillment, constitutes one of the most powerful belief sets in human history. A diverse set of case studies is considered here to illustrate the range of this phenomenon and its consequences. ⸙
