Abstract
This chapter sets out the rationale and purpose of the book. A preliminary explanation of the nuances of meaning of mathematical literacy (ML) is offered, followed by a brief summary of research on ML carried out by the first author in Norway, the relevance of this to the international context is explained. Four issues about teaching and learning for ML faced by practitioners and researchers are presented: conceptualisation, professional development, teacher education, and educational resources for ML. The remainder of the chapter is composed of brief introductions to each of the remaining chapters in the book.
