The article looks into the relation between Nestroy’s conclusive “tableaux” and the way the “dramatis personae” react to them. These tableaux find their most active function where Nestroy’s dramaturgy is based on an exemplary case demonstration. As long as the stage characters are able to distance themselves from the plot and their role, a dramatic tension between text and image can be preserved. Moral abstraction, however, as well as emotional appeals to the audience and almost open endings dejimctionalize the tableaux and make them vanish.
