The analysis of stone artefacts from the open-air localities of Geelbek and Anyskop in the Western Cape of South Africa offers new insight into the behaviour of Middle Stone Age hunters and gatherers. We examined five deflation bays in these mobile dune systems which, in contrast to caves or rockshelters, display large-scale spatial patterning with regard to the distribution of lithic artefacts and faunal remains. The definition of raw material units enabled us to reconstruct the patterns of production, use, and discard of stone artefacts. The results reveal that hunters and gatherers, such as those who produced Howiesons Poort stone artefacts, employed diverse planning strategies in terms of raw material exploitation, transport technology and site use. Although the faunal remains are not yet fully evaluated, the presence of stone points and segments suggests that hunting played an important role among the activities documented at Geelbek and Anyskop. The low number and heterogeneity of the stone artefacts suggest that people of the Middle Stone Age were highly mobile.

A Journal of Contemporary Religious Discourse

Religion & Theology publishes scholarly articles of high quality on religion, theology, and related fields and particularly focuses on the metatheoretical conception of the relation between theology (insider language) and theory of religion (outsider language). Religion & Theology encourages dialogue between divergent theoretical, conceptual and disciplinary languages, with a view to reconceptualising theology (in theory and praxis) in the light of contemporary theory of religion, especially more recent social and rhetorical theories of religion. The journal invites essays that are not merely descriptive but substantially theorises the disciplinary field or topic the essay is about. The journal pursues new ways of conceptualising religion and theology as constructed academic religious discourses, as well as reflecting on new disciplinary practices. The journal functions as an international forum for contemporary religious discourse on behalf of the Society for Theory of Religion and Theology. All contributions are peer-reviewed. The journal also publishes review articles and book reviews.

The Afrika-Studiecentrum Series aims to present the best of African studies in the field of social sciences in the Netherlands. Publication in the series is open to all Dutch africanists and also to African scholars who are affiliated to a Dutch academic institution. Publications can be either monographs or edited volumes, in various disciplines and across all African nations, either on a single country or comparing different countries.

This series of studies on child law and children’s rights seeks to provide timely and high-quality analyses of all issues relating to the interface of children and adolescents with their surrounding societies. The focus is on legal research results, but multi-disciplinary child-right-related studies also have an obvious place in the series. The diversity of contributions will be maintained by including scholarly works by academics and scholars from all geographical areas.
New Research – New Voices involves two strands, leaving open the possibility of others as the series grows:
Strand 1: New Voices and New Knowledge in Research Methodology
This strand in the book series is dedicated to producing cutting-edge titles focusing on Research Methodology. While it might be generally acknowledged that educational researchers often tend to import methods developed in neighboring disciplines, this is not always acknowledged in the literature on methodology. This series intends to contribute to the knowledge foundation in educational research by specifically seeking out those who work both across disciplines and inter-disciplinary in terms of their methodological approaches. The overall focus is to develop a series focusing on those methods which are appropriate in dealing with the specific research problems of the discipline.
The series provides students and scholars with state-of-the-art scholarship on methodology, methods and techniques focusing on a range of research topics. It comprises innovative and intellectually rigorous monographs and edited collections which bridge schools of thought and cross the boundaries of conventional approaches. The series covers a broad range of issues focusing on not only empirical-analytical and interpretive approaches, but moreover on micro and macro studies, and quantitative and qualitative methods.
Strand 2: New Voices and New Knowledge in Educational Research
This part of the series will focus on theoretical and empirical contributions that are unique and will provide important insights into the field of educational research across a range of contexts globally. This part of the series will collectively communicate new voices, new insights and new possibilities within the field of educational research. In particular the focus will be on scholars, students and communities that have often been excluded or marginalized within educational research and practice.
Increasing legal integration and interdependency places comparative studies at the heart of legal analysis. Research identifying the converging elements and principles in view of a common legal culture of diversity is necessary. This is particularly true for its territorial and socio-cultural dimensions as these regard the organization of living-together.
Regarding territorial diversity, the interaction of multiple levels of government in addressing complex governance issues and its regulation is of utmost interest. Comparative federal and autonomy studies shall explore theoretical perspectives and foundations, as well as specific policy areas, exploring in depth pluralistic governance and decision-making. Social and cultural diversity implies a modern understanding of the accommodation of multiple groups’ claims sharing the same territory. Going beyond traditional studies on minorities and their rights, new challenges in the accommodation of differences have to be addressed, including the accommodation of non-traditional forms of diversity. Moreover, often the same instruments can be used for the management of territorial as well as for social and cultural diversities. While privileging a comparative constitutional approach, the series faces new methodological demands and includes trans-disciplinary studies in order to meet the contemporary challenge of diversity in an integrated legal space, in Europe and beyond.
