very large harms to prevent very minor harms to many people (such as causing a single person fifty years of torturous pain for the sake of preventing very minor headaches for a very large number of people), and the transitivity of “better than”, i.e., the claim that if A is better than B and B is

than another, all things considered, is not a transitive one. That is to say, A might be better than B (all things considered—a qualification I won’t keep repeating), B better than C, and yet, for all that, it might not be true that A is better than C. Indeed, C might be better than A. The better

the following specific research questions within the context of Thomason and Kaufman’s (1988 ) language contact model of pidgin/creole genesis: 1. Do cpe verbs show simplification or complexification in valency and transitivity patterns compared to the corresponding patterns in the lexifier language

This paper examines the behavior of 16 transitive verbs, belonging to four different categories, in ten pre-Qin texts. The study reveals that in cases where no object is present, this is not arbitrary. Rather, there are clear restrictions on the non-occurrence of objects, which can be correlated with eight distinct situations. These can be accounted for in terms of the ten parameters proposed by Paul J. Hopper and Sandra A. Thompson in "Transitivity in grammar and discourse" (1980). In addition, the paper discusses the behavior of transitive verbs in the Dunhuang bianwen and concludes that the situation we observe in these later writings is rather different from what we find in the pre-Qin language.

This entry analyzes the semantic and morpho-syntactic features of transitive states of affairs in Ancient Greek and focuses on the semantic factors that allow the morpho-syntactic and structural properties of prototypical transitive constructions. In its traditional use, transitivity is understood

Transitivity is defined narrowly as a state of direct dependence of a nominal phrase (i.e. noun or noun phrase) on a verbal element (i.e. verb or verblike element). A transitive clause involves a minimum of two participants – a subject (prototypically an agent) and an object (prototypically an

It is exceedingly plausible that the normative reason involving relations , 1 ‘more reason to do than’ 2 and ‘is rationally preferred to,’ are transitive. 3 Many philosophers and economists use the plausibility of covariation between these normative reason-involving relations and

class systems that I analyze, ranging from simpler, more holistic properties to more complicated and fine-grained ones. These aspects are: (i) lexical extent of transitives; (ii) lexical extent of frames defined in terms of “locus” of non-transitivity, that is, based on whether A or P (or both) are

(Jacques, 2014) 2.2 Transitivity and Indexation in Japhug Rgyalrong languages have polypersonal person and number indexation on the verb, and present a near-canonical direct-inverse system, which has been described in previous research ( Delancey, 1981 on Situ, Sun and Shidanluo, 2002 on Tshobdun

Internal Aspect view rather than an Essentially Comparative view, and which entails that the better-than relation is fully transitive. Fortunately, Temkin does not take the route of rejecting the Neutrality of Non-Existence. Instead, he proposes an alternative response to the Non-Identity Problem. He
