I would like to thank Michael Peters for the invitation to publish a book in this series. Michael is not only an influential scholar and prolific writer, but may also turn out to be the most influential figure in the development of the global publication infrastructure of the philosophy of education at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. His role as editor of a range of journals and book series, but also his role as initiator of a range of new publication initiatives and publication formats, has had a crucial impact on philosophy of education in the English-speaking world. In all this Michael displays a truly democratic generosity, constantly acting on the conviction that everyone has a right to a voice – which of course comes with a responsibility to use this voice well. I have personally benefitted from this in my own writing career, starting with Michael’s kind invitation to publish my first monograph (Beyond Learning: Democratic Education for a Human Future) in a series he was editing at the time. I dedicate this book to Michael’s unfaltering energy and enthusiasm.
