Abstract

We can use the quotations in the Oxford English Dictionary, well over a million, as a corpus for historical studies in English. The Second Edition of OED registers many linguistic terms as headwords, under which many quotations from the linguists and philologists of the 19th and 20th centuries appear. With the CD-ROM we can now use those quotations fully, together with the explanatory notes and definitions of the headwords, to illustrate development or change of what a particular linguistic term has meant. In this paper some suggestions will be made for utilizing those quotations in comparing well organized quotations columns with those hastily or carelessly finished.
