This paper presents the initial stage of an on-going project where the relationship of different types of texts is examined exclusively on the basis of [low level surface] parameters. The paper describes the method we have developed and presents the results of our first pilot investigation. The description includes an account of the parameters used for the study, the statistical apparatus, and the corpus data. In the pilot study, native English data is compared to texts produced by Swedish language learners showing the feasibility of our method.
